I've been link building to some websites using different techniques recently to see if different link building plans work. And one thing it has proven to me is that you must link build to a well thought out plan.
Just going out and getting hundreds of links does not work. The links must be off good sites and the anchor texts must be relevant to your proposed traffic.
It is fine to build huge numbers of random links and yes, you might improve your Page Rank. But, Page Rank does not equal traffic. And that is why Link Data Visualization is important - you must know what you are building for and where you are going to with links you are building, else you can be wasting a lot of time.
Work out your traffic target in terms of quality search terms, check that they are achievable and work to them. And good luck!
